The Arbitration Symposium which was organized by the Young Arbitrators Network in conjunction with the ADR society held on the 17th of February 2017. It was a very enlightening program as everyone was excited to learn about new Arbitration concepts.
The symposium was divided into four sessions. The first was Introduction to Arbitration by Mr Isaiah Bozimo then we had Mr Orji Uka educate us on the concept of Arbitrability. The third session was on the Doctrine of Separability by Miss Ibukun Owa and finally Miss Peace Adebanjo gave a brief lecture on Competence-Competence. They were all awesome.
I really can’t wait till the next symposium and I trust everyone that was present feels the same way.

Just before I end this, let’s find out what two members of the society have to say about the Symposium.
Hello guys .Could you introduce yourselves to us?
Aaron : Hi, I’m Aaron, a 300 level student of the law faculty
Lauretta: My name is Lauretta Onwuegbuzie, I’m a 300 level student of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.
What do you think about the YAN?
Aaron: The Young Arbitrators Network is a great opportunity for young people (not necessarily law students) who want to learn the skill of Arbitration, to be trained by experienced Arbitrators while in university . Plus you get a certificate
Lauretta: The YAN is a very good initiative. It will help to train a lot of young people who are interested in Arbitration by giving them the necessary training from Professional and experienced Arbitrators.
Do you plan on becoming a member?
Aaron: Yes, hopefully before the end of this year.
Lauretta: Yes I do, I’ll probably join in my next semester.
How did you find the symposium on Friday?
Aaron: I thought it was great. We learnt about more about Arbitration and the key aspects and doctrines of commercial Arbitration. It was enlightening.
Lauretta: It was very enlightening. I just joined the ADR society and the symposium exposed me to new concepts of Arbitration that I hadn’t come across in the course of my earlier research.
What was the highlight of the event for you?
Aaron: When we were told we wouldn’t have to write notes because the slides would be given to us later
Lauretta: I found every part of the event very interesting, so there was no particular highlight for me
Did the event broaden your scope on the jurisdiction of arbitration?
Aaron: Yes, it did. Especially on what arbitration is and what it isn’t
Lauretta: Yes it did. I must say, I got to understand Arbitration on a more advanced level especially some new terms and concepts like competence-competence and seperability.
What session did you enjoy?
Aaron:I enjoyed the season on the introduction to commercial Arbitration as well as the session on Separability. They were really interesting.
Lauretta: I enjoyed the session on competence-competence. It sounded funny at first to me and I thought it would be one abstract theory but after the session, I understood it completely.
If a similar event is being organised outside school for the ADR society would you like to go?
Aaron: yes, I would love to.
Lauretta: Yes definitely I would love to attend.
What would you like to say to the ADR society?
Aaron: Stay Classy
Lauretta: I’d like to thank the ADR society and commend them. I just joined and so far I’m glad I did so, there’s so much to offer.
