EVENT REPORT: The 2nd Annual ADR Meet

The Alternative Dispute Resolution Society (UNILAG) on Wednesday, 31st August 2016 hosted the 2nd edition of its annual conference, The ADR Meet. This years’ edition was themed “Arbitration & ADR: The Alternative or the Ultimate?”

The programme kicked off with the Opening Prayer, the National Anthem and then the Opening Remarks by the President, Iluezi-Ogbaudu Efemena ACIArb, who welcomed all attendees to the programme and gave honour to whom honour was due.

The conference featured a keynote speech by someone who we fonsly refer to as the double-edged sword, Mr. Olatunde Busari SAN FCIArb, a man who holds the greatest accolades in both factions of the dispute resolution ‘industry’. He is both a Senior Advocate of Nigeria & a Chartered Arbitrator. The students were overjoyed to have him speak to them and they listened very attentively.

Next up, without wasting any time, the sessions began. First was the Negotiation session which was moderated by the beautiful Director of Research & Head of the Institute, Miss Chiamaka Ibeh ACIArb. The session featured Mrs. Chinweaku Odigboeagwu (Head, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Nigerian Bottling Company), Mrs Oluwaseun Phillip Idiok (AÉLEX Legal Practitioners) & Tenilola Olowu (Associate, Aina Blankson LP & Founder, The ADR Society). The students were thrilled to hear from the panelists and discussions were both exciting and educating.

Next up was the Tea Break to give the attendees some of what we had in store for them. They proceeded to the part of the conference hall set apart for that while the Disc Jockey teased their ears with some cool, soft music.

Immediately after the break, the Mediation session took off! Miss Gboremioluwa Ogundipe, the gorgeous Vice President of the society, anchored this session and it featured reputable mediators,  Mrs Ronke Koku (Door Partners ADR) and Mrs Bamgbose (Office of the Public Defender). Like the Negotiation session, this too was top-notch.

Finally, the Arbitration session took centre-stage. This session featured Mr. Olurotimi Aju MCIArb (Partner, Consolex Legal Practitioners), Mr. Greg Nwakogo MCIArb (Managing Partner, Rosberg Legal Practitioners), Mrs. Oluwakemi Eweje MCIArb (General Manager, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators UK Nigeria Branch) and was moderated by the President of The ADR Society (UNILAG), Efemena Iluezi-Ogbaudu ACIArb. Without a doubt, there would have been no better way ti end the programme as it was not just enlightening,  it was also thought-provoking and exciting.

Unfortunately, good things, like everything that exists must come to and end, and this was no different. Dr. A.A Olawoyin SAN (Staff Adviser, The ADR Society) & Dr. Omogbai Omo-Eboh (Patron, The ADR Society & Partner, Consolex Legal Practitioners) gave closing addresses which resulted in resounding applauses.

Celebrations were in order. The entire society wished Staff Adviser, Dr. Adewale Olawoyin SAN, a happy birthday, as the Executive Committee of the society presented him with a cake while all attendees chorused the ‘Happy Birthday’ song as we rounded up the programme.

We cannot forget to appreciate our beautiful comperes, Miss Eniola Longe ACIArb, member of our society & Mr. Jones Ayuwo ACIArb, who is also a member of our society. They ensured that there was never a boring moment.
